Plaque disclosing tablets contain a dye that attaches to plaque. After you chew the tablet and spread the dye around your mouth, areas with plaque become a noticeable color, such as pink, red, purple, or blue. Seeing the plaque makes it easier to identify areas where your daily cleaning may need improvement.
How to Use Plaque Disclosing Tablets
Product directions can vary, so follow the instructions included with the tablets you choose. A common way to use plaque disclosing tablets is:
- Brush and floss normally: Using the tablet afterward can show you what your usual routine missed.
- Chew the tablet thoroughly: Move your tongue around your teeth to help spread the dye across the tooth surfaces.
- Spit out the excess: Follow the product instructions about whether to rinse at this stage.
- Check your teeth in a mirror: Look for colored areas where plaque remains.
- Brush the stained areas again: Focus on removing the visible plaque rather than simply brushing harder.
- Rinse your mouth: Some temporary coloring may remain on the tongue or other soft tissues.
You can then use what you see to adjust how you clean those areas the next time you brush.
What Do the Colors Mean?
It depends on the product. Some disclosing tablets use one color simply to show where plaque is present. Other products use two colors to distinguish between newer plaque and plaque that has remained on the teeth longer. For example, one shade may identify recently formed plaque while another highlights older buildup.
The color system is not the same for every product, so check the package rather than assuming a particular color always has the same meaning.
What Plaque Disclosing Tablets Can Show You
The biggest benefit of disclosing tablets is that they make patterns easier to spot. If color repeatedly appears in the same places, you may not be reaching those surfaces effectively.
Plaque often gets missed:
- Along the gumline
- Behind the lower front teeth
- On the back teeth
- Between closely spaced teeth
- Around crowns and other dental work
- Around orthodontic appliances
Once you identify a problem area, you can change the angle of your toothbrush or spend more time cleaning that surface.
If staining repeatedly appears between your teeth, brushing alone may not be reaching the area. Using the proper flossing technique helps remove plaque from surfaces between teeth that a toothbrush cannot clean effectively.
Plaque and Professional Cleanings
Plaque disclosing tablets are a home-care tool. They show you where plaque remains, but they do not remove hardened tartar or tell you whether your teeth and gums are healthy.
When plaque remains on the teeth long enough, minerals in saliva can cause it to harden into tartar, also called calculus. Unlike soft plaque, tartar cannot be removed effectively with normal brushing and flossing.
